Introduction
Found in the exact centre of Ireland, Mullingar town is located in Westmeath County with a population of over 20,000 people. The town is surrounded by many lakes- Lough Derravaragh, Lough Ennell, and Lough Owel. Mullingar used to be a market town, but this has changed in the early 2000s and nowadays Mullingar is known for cultural events and famous sites. It’s also a popular hen destination among Hen-Do groups that like Mullingar town for its atmosphere.
Local knowledge
One of the biggest Mullingar attractions is Belvedere House and Gardens, located only 5 minutes drive from Mullingar town and it’s a must see place while you vistining Mullingar.This is 160 acre lakeside estate contains a fully restored Georgian Villa, Victorian Walled Garden, and naturalistic designed 18th century parkland. If you want to add a bit of elegance and class to your hen weekend, you definitely should consider visiting this place, your Hen-Do crew will absolutely love it !
Mullingar is also the hometown of many world-class singer stars. Joe Dolan, was born in Mullingar. A bronze life-size statue of Joe stands today in Mullingar’s Market Square where many Hen groups have been known to jump in for a photo or two. Joe sadly passed away in 2007 but is fondly remembered by the local people of Mullingar who are known to fondly recall ‘there was no show like a Joe show’.
Perhaps, the next best thing to come out of Mullingar since Joe Dolan is the global superstar and One Direction member Niall Horan. Niall is very proud of his Mullingar roots and has been known to be spotted around the town on occasion. How to get to Mullingar
General
Mullingar is conveniently located close to the centre of Ireland next to the M4 motorway and is adequately served by excellent rail and bus links.
From Dublin – 80km
By car: Take the M4 motorway from Dublin. A journey time of approximately 1 hour.
By train: The Dublin to Sligo train service departs from Dublin Connolly Station and stops off at Mullingar with a regular daily service operating. Check out Irish Rail for more information.
By bus: Expressway Route 23 operates between Dublin Busaras and Sligo, stopping off at Mullingar. Check out Expressway for more information.
From Cork – 235km
By car: Take the M8 and M7 motorways from Cork exiting at Junction 18 Portlaoise. Then follow the N80 and N52 National Routes to Mullingar. A journey time of approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.
By train: Take the Cork to Dublin train service from Cork Kent station to Dublin Heuston Station. At Heuston Station take the Luas to Dublin Connolly and from Connolly, you can take the Dublin to Sligo train service stopping off at Mullingar. Check out Irish Rail for more information.
By bus: There is no direct bus service between Cork and Mullingar.
Galway – 145km
By car: Take the M6 and M4 motorways from Galway to Dublin City exiting at Junction 4 Tyrellspass. Then take the N52 National Route to Mullingar. A journey time of approximately 1 hour 40 minutes.
By train: Take the Galway to Dublin train service from Galway Ceannt station to Dublin Heuston Station. At Heuston Station take the Luas to Dublin Connolly and from Connolly, you can take the Dublin to Sligo train service stopping off at Mullingar. Check out Irish Rail for more information.
By bus: There is no direct bus service between Galway and Mullingar.
Belfast – 240km
By car: Take the M1 out of Belfast, towards Dublin. At Dublin, merge on to the M50 and then take the M4 motorway exit for the West. A journey time of approximately 2 hours 40 minutes.
By train: The ‘Enterprise’ service operates regularly between Belfast Lanyon Place station and Dublin Connolly Station. Change at Connolly station and take the Dublin to Sligo train service stopping off at Mullingar. Check out Irish Rail for more information.
